Are inconsistent decisions better? An experiment with pairwise comparisons
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper tries to contribute to the well-known and lengthy discussion on whether we should allow decision makers to be inconsistent, or, to put it in another way, if intransitive decisions better represent their preferences. We will focus specifically on the multiple-criteria decision making problem, since it is one of the most usual stances where this intransitivity appears. Result from an experiment carried out with graduate students show that, when intransitivities are removed, the preferences of decision makers are not better represented, and therefore that the effort to do so may not be justified.

Inconsistency in the ordinal pairwise comparisons method with and without ties
Comparing alternatives in pairs is a well-known method of ranking creation. Experts are asked to perform a series of binary comparisons and then, using mathematical methods, the final ranking is prepared. As experts conduct the individual assessments, they may not always be consistent. The level of inconsistency among individual assessments is widely accepted as a measure of the ranking quality...
متن کاملOn the Convergence of the Pairwise Comparisons Inconsistency Reduction Process
This study investigates a powerful model, targeted to subjective assessments, based on pairwise comparisons. It provides a proof that a distance-based inconsistency reduction transforms an inconsistent pairwise comparisons (PC) matrix into a consistent PC matrix which is generated by the geometric means of rows of a given inconsistent PC matrix. The distance-based inconsistency indicator was de...
متن کاملOn Inconsistency Indices and Inconsistency Axioms in Pairwise Comparisons
Pairwise comparisons are an important tool of modern (multiple criteria) decision making. Since human judgments are often inconsistent, many studies focused on the ways how to express and measure this inconsistency, and several inconsistency indices were proposed as an alternative to Saaty’s inconsistency index and inconsistency ratio for reciprocal pairwise comparisons matrices. This paper aim...
متن کاملDecision making with the analytic hierarchy process
Decisions involve many intangibles that need to be traded off. To do that, they have to be measured along side tangibles whose measurements must also be evaluated as to, how well, they serve the objectives of the decision maker. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is a theory of measurement through pairwise comparisons and relies on the judgements of experts to derive priority scales. It is th...
متن کاملMulti-Criteria Decision Making Method for n-wise Criteria Comparisons and Inconsistent Problems
The purpose of this paper is to present an alternative of a hybrid method based on Saaty’s Analytical Hierarchy Process and on the Technique for Order Preference by using the Similarity to Ideal Solution method (AHP-TOPSIS) and, based on the AHP and its use of pairwise comparisons, to extend it to a new method called α-D MCDMTOPSIS (α-Discounting Method for multi-criteria decision making-TOPSIS...
